Owned by Heidi Krahling of neighboring Insalata’s fame, Marinitas has been open since early 2009. A welcome addition to somewhat sleepy San Anselmo, the restaurant is abuzz with professionals looking to relax post-work, singles looking for a little something more, families, and large parties (the scene practically qualifies as a rave by Marin County standards).

The cavernous space is framed by a high, open-beam ceiling, significant stone fireplace, large leather booths, and lots of kitschy stuff. An added blessing–the Virgin of Guadalupe keeps a watchful eye from above the massive front doors.

Belly up to the bar and enjoy Margaritas (made just like we like them; shaken, no fluff) and Antojitos (small plates served until midnight). In addition to 90-plus tequilas, the bar features signature cocktails, including the Marin Mojito, beers on tap and by the bottle, and a selection of Argentinean and Chilean wines (a reserve list is a recent addition).

The full lunch/dinner menu highlights dishes from various regions of Mexico and Latin America. Empanadas are offered side-by-side with queso fundido; bistec Argentino with enchiladas de pollo. The focus is on fresh, local and seasonal ingredients so it’s not surprising (well, maybe it’s a little surprising) that two of our favorite dishes are salads. The Mexicana is comprised of chopped romaine lettuce with radish, jicama, crispy tortilla ribbons, almonds and a cumin citrus vinaigrette. The Marinita’s is equally yummy—a little gem salad with avocado, pumpkin seeds, queso fresco, cilantro, and a creamy lime dressing.

Other favorites are the Alaskan cod with corn cakes and cherry tomato, pumpkin seed sauce, and tacos de carne asada. We never seem to have room for dessert but friends have raved about the churros with warm chocolate sauce. Maybe tonight?

Managed by Patrick Coll, a restaurant industry veteran, Marinitas serves up good food and a good time!
